Hawthorn Extract Effective Treatment for Chronic Heart Failure

A UK medical team lead by Dr. Max H. Pittler concluded that hawthorn extract was an effective treatment for chronic heart failure.

After reviewing the literature of 14 studies comparing hawthorn extract to placebo heart failure patients, they determined that hawthorn extract has significant benefit for patients with chronic heart failure. While the studies did not address how the hawthorn extract works, Dr. Pittler suggests that it may strengthen heart muscle contractions.

The report was published in the Cochrane Library 2008, Issue 1. The Cochrane Library is an independent medical journal published by The Cochrane Collaboration international not-for-profit organization.
